The house building is in support of an organization called Tabitha. Janne Ritskes, a Canadian, established Tabitha over 10 years ago. Tabitha invites volunteers to build houses in Cambodia in cooperation with Cambodians who have saved for several years to purchase a house. The average annual income for Cambodians is $1 USD per day, so for them to be able to save money means a constant struggle. This is a great program because we aren't just giving this to them to make them feel like a charity case, they work very hard for many years and make unbelievable sacrifices in order to get these homes. Most of these people are very modest and humble and would not feel right taking something for nothing. The volunteer house builders also contribute money to help buy the materials and resources needed to build the homes.
To build one house we need to raise $960 USD.The entire team's goal is to build 6 homes. These are very modest little homes that have only one room about 10' X 15' and will house a family of up to 10 people. This replaces their current straw and wood huts that often get torn down during the monsoon season.
This promises to be a great experience to work together as a team and one that would turn out to be rewarding and heart-warming. The building activities mainly involve finishing the construction of the houses as the foundations are laid in advance before the visit of the team. The money can be raised through a variety of ways including donations from colleagues, fundraising events, small sales and so on. The nature of such activities is entirely up to the team.
